Zij verdedigt het grondrecht van de Nederlandse burger op privacy en communicatievrijheid.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Digitale vrijheid<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Sinds 2000 zet de stichting Bits of Freedom zich in voor de bescherming van digitale vrijheid en privacy. Voorbeelden hiervan zijn de strijd tegen partijen die de privacy van burgers schenden en het verzet zich tegen een wetsvoorstel om internetproviders de mogelijkheid te geven zelf te bepalen welke websites ze doorgeven.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Communicatievrijheid<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Bits of Freedom beschouwt privacy en communicatievrijheid op internet als onmisbaar voor individuele ontplooiing, technologische innovatie en de rechtsstaat. Die vrijheid is echter niet vanzelfsprekend. Gegevens van burgers worden opgeslagen en geanalyseerd. Internetverkeer wordt gevolgd en kan worden geblokkeerd. Bits of Freedom wil dat jouw internet jouw zaak blijft: open voor iedereen, waar iedereen informatie kan delen en waar priv\u00e9 communicatie priv\u00e9 blijft. Waar je vrij kunt mailen, surfen en bloggen.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Bits of Freedom: een burgerrechtenbeweging<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>In korte tijd heeft Bits of Freedom zich ontwikkeld tot een invloedrijke burgerrechtenbeweging. Zij houdt overheid en bedrijfsleven scherp in de gaten. Zij kan beschikken over veel expertise, voert een constructieve lobby waar dat kan en kiest voor scherpe actie waar dat volgens haar moet. Ge\u00efnteresseerden worden met een tweewekelijkse e-mailnieuwsbrief ge\u00efnformeerd over actuele kwesties, relevante wetgeving, politieke debatten, rechtszaken en openbare discussies.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Big Brother Awards<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Een van de spraakmakende initiatieven van Bits of Freedom zijn de Big Brother Awards. Deze worden jaarlijks uitgereikt aan de grootste privacyschenders in het voorbije jaar. De publieksprijs werd uitgereikt aan Ronald Plasterk, minister van Binnenlandse Zaken, voor zijn plannen voor de meest vergaande afluisterwet die Nederland ooit heeft gekend. Die wet geeft de geheime diensten de mogelijkheid om in \u00e9\u00e9n keer een hele wijk of een hele stad af te tappen en hij weigert te luisteren naar kritiek daarop. Minister Plasterk bleef verzekeraar Achmea (inruilen van solidariteit voor big data) en Microsoft (slechte privacy-instellingen in Windows 10) voor.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Predictive policing<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>De Nationale Politie kreeg een Big Brother Award die wordt toegekend door experts. Zij kreeg die voor het inzetten van \u2018predictive policing\u2019 op basis van big data. Door analyse van afwijkend gedrag kan de kans op een misdrijf worden voorspeld. Volgens Bits of Freedom wordt de politie hiermee een data-verzamelaar en maakt zij afwijkend gedrag verdacht. Terwijl de focus moet liggen op strafbaar gedrag, niet op afwijkend gedrag. Andere kanshebbers waren het Van der Valk-hotel in Hengelo (vrijwillig en stelselmatig doorgeven van klantgegevens aan de politie) en nogmaals minister Plasterk (nieuwe afluisterwet voor geheime diensten).<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Positief onderscheid<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Zijn er volgens Bits of Freedom ook personen en organisaties die zich positief onderscheiden? Jazeker. De positieve privacyprijs, de zogeheten Felipe Rodriguez Award, ging onlangs naar Max Schrems. Deze 28-jarige Oostenrijker is oprichter van \u2018Europe versus Facebook\u2019 en initiator van de rechtszaak over Safe Harbor.
